Selling on Amazon FBA (Fulfillment by Amazon) is a powerful way to scale, but without a rigorous understanding of cubic volume, it can also be a quick way to lose your entire margin to warehouse fees. Amazon isn't just a marketplace; they are a world-class logistics company that charges you for every square inch of space your inventory occupies.

The Q4 "Storage Shock"

Amazon utilizes a seasonal pricing model. Between January and September, storage rates are standard. However, from October to December, those rates can triple as Amazon clears space for holiday peak volume. Many sellers fail to adjust their inventory levels in August and September, leading to a "Storage Shock" on their October settlement report that wipes out their holiday profits.

Aged Inventory Surcharges: The Silent Killer

Amazon applies an "Aged Inventory Surcharge" to any product that has been in a fulfillment center for more than 181 days. These fees are significantly higher than standard storage rates. If your "Sell-Through Rate" is low, you might actually save money by requesting a Removal Order and bringing the stock back to your own warehouse rather than letting it sit at Amazon.

The Importance of Packaging Efficiency

Amazon calculates your fees based on the unit dimensions including the packaging. If your product could fit in a 6x6x6 box but you ship it in an 8x8x8 box, you are paying for nearly double the cubic volume. Over 10,000 units, this small packaging oversight could cost you $20,000 or more in unnecessary FBA fees.
